Chronic stomach pains?

For the past several months I’ve been experiencing stomach issues on and off, and when it’s on they’re terrible. For example I have really bad lower back pain (usually on my right side) that I think is from gas/constipation…and I feel like when I do use the bathroom I never get it all out (sorry, TMI). Typically this pain is at the end of the day, when I’m laying down. I tried taking some stool softeners last night, but I still haven’t gotten any relief….I may have to break out the Milk of Magnesia tonight!

With Dr. Google’s help I diagnosed myself with IBS (not the kind where you go all the time, but the kind where you get bad pains and constipation regularly). I’ve read there really isn’t a cure, but it can be helped through diet and exercise…..GREAT! I’m wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that I’m having trouble losing weight??

Anyone else have trouble with this? I’m wondering if it’s related to my fertility treatments somehow….because the progesterone suppositories I take after my IUI’s always give me terrible constipation, and I really don’t remember ALWAYS having trouble/pain like this. I really don’t know, it’s not something I’m going to make an appointment for right now…but I will definitely talk to my RE about it when I go back to see him in late July/early August.

  1. I have had chronic constipation pretty much my whole life. My GI dr recommended miralax, but I am not sure if it is ‘allowed’ while TTC. Def a question for the RE!!

    • Ugh, sorry to hear that! Yea, Miralax and Milk of Magnesia are both allowed while TTC and pregnant…..how often do you take it??

      • I try to not take it very often, no specific reason. Probably if I took it more often I would have less issues! I take it probably 2x a month right now. Great to know that it is a safe option!! I hope you get some relief soon!

      • Oh okay, I thought you meant you took it more regularly than that. So just on an as needed basis? Do you get the bad lower back cramps I was talking about? It’s so uncomfortable!! Thank you.

      • For whatever dumb reason I try to hold off on taking it. I like to think that maybe, just maybe my body will start to work, ha! Yeah right. Probably I should take it at least once a week.

        I get terrible back pain!! It is awful!! As well as getting super bloated. It is all around not fun. I even had a colonoscopy & all the GI dr could say was ‘welp you have a lazy colon’, lovely!

      • LOL, I’m like that too….plus I’m paranoid if I take it too often I’ll eventually NEED it to poop at all.

        Jeez, I just can’t get comfortable when I get pain like that. Yes the bloat is terrible too! I’ve been dieting & doing the Insanity workouts for 5+ weeks now and only lost 2 lbs….I just know that’s not right!!! LOL, that sucks.

      • YES! I am afraid of that as well! Even though my GI dr did say that you can’t become dependent on the miralax like you can with regular stimulant type laxatives.

        It is really the most uncomfortable feeling ever!

        How frustrating!! I am sorry! Keep up the hard work though, it will pay off!

      • That’s good to know!! I had to use a whole bottle of Miralax (and some Dulcolax pills) as my clean out before my laparoscopy, so I’ve been scared of that brand ever since….lol. But it is pretty mild. Just like MOM. I usually take it when I get off work and it works before bed or in the morning, gently!

  2. I have Ulcerative Colitis and prior to that had suffered from IBS throughout childhood. My “go to” is Milk ‘o Mag–tried ALL the things, but find this is best. And yeah, the progesterone just ruins me! I’m sure you’re doing your best, but things that help me are: coffee (the kind with caffeine), staying hydrated, exercise, getting enough sleep, staying away from processed foods & cheese…and then the occasional fleet enema (because sometimes, you’re “plugged” and milk ‘o mag ain’t enough). Most definitely talk to your doctor. Progesterone isn’t the only thing that can slow your bowels and impede weight loss–when was the last time you had your thyroid checked? Was it under 2.5? XOXO

    • Oh jeez! That sounds painful. Thanks!! Maybe I need to start drinking coffee again, I stopped drinking it a few months ago. I’ll definitely talk to my doctor about it, I just don’t think it’s worth a special trip right now. Honestly, not sure about my thyroid…..will ask about it too! Thanks for all of the tips & tricks. Can’t wait to get my MOM on tonight! LOL.

  3. I can’t remember, I know you had the lapro done…do you have endometriosis? IBS symptoms is part of that. Miralax helps me so much. Have you tried reducing your gluten intake? That can help if it’s endo related.

    Just read some other comments. I took miralax every day per my GI dr. But I was only having a bm once a week. Start with every other day then increase or decrease if needed. It works too fast for some people so do it on a day you can run to the toilet quickly lol.

    • No endo, but hmm I wonder if gluten might be some of my problem too!! I’m having BM’s more than once a week, but usually it’s only just a little bit, not a normal amount. Will do…thanks for the tips. LOL.

  4. I’ve seen a naturopath, an iridologist and a few other holistic health practitioners for stomach issues. Turns out I have a dairy sensitivity, but that most of my issues can be resolved via a more well-balanced diet that avoids certain types of food (we want to balance out too much acid in my stomach). In the past 2 years, I went from NOT pooping ever (like seriously once a week) to pooping AT LEAST once a day. I truly believe most bowl issues can be maintained with diet changes. MLACS is right – get the thyroid checked. Mine is borderline low (but not enough for Western medicine to diagnose).

  5. I’ve had a ton of stomach problems, but only since I went off BCPs, which was several years ago now. I have acid reflux really bad and take meds for that daily, but my stomach (gas issues) bothers me daily now. My OB and RE swear it’s not from going off the pill, but I feel like it has to be related to hormones or why else would I discover it recently… Good to luck, it’s awful feeling icky so often.

    • Sheesh, who knew?? You’re probably right! I noticed when I stopped taking BCP I started getting very bad canker sores…I guess the BCP was helping keep those at bay all these years, because I remember having them terrible as a child too. Thank you, yes it is!!

  6. Before I started fertility, I would be in the bathroom all the time. Someone would look at me the wrong way and I would be in the bathroom. Fast forward to fertility treatments and I was having a horrible horrible time, there was a time that I would go once every 2 weeks but I would sit on the toilet for hours in tears trying for that one time.

    Something that helped me for the short term was baby prunes, I would eat a jar of them and within 30 minutes I would be on the toilet.

    Something else my fertility specialist did was take me off the prenatal vitamins. I know take folic acid and a Bcomplex and a pro biotic. That has helped immensely.

    • Ugh, so sorry to hear of your troubles!!

      I did try the prunes, I was eating 5 per day (that was all I could stand, lol)…I tried that for a few weeks and it didn’t seem to help much.

      Wonder if that’s part of my problem too, with the prenatals…I’ve been on them almost 3 years now….it’s hard to tell when I started having the stomach troubles. Thanks for the tips!

  7. I didn’t read the other comments but hopefully I can help. I have ibs, specifically the same type you have. For years I took psyllium husk pills with a glass of water before meals and that helped. Now I take miralax and need two cap fulls a DAY.

    I am also gluten free but notice i feel better the less dairy i eat. More water, less milk.

    I also have autoimmune thyroid issues – Hashimoto’s and that definitely doesn’t help you lose weight when it is out of whack!

    So i feel for you. Deep down, i imagine this all must have contributed to my infertility. Good luck!

    • Sheesh, yea I think I’m going to have to start taking Miralax regularly until something changes….I just can’t take it anymore, I feel terrible….too often!!

      Hmm, interesting….I’ll do more reading about the dairy/gluten issues….maybe that’s part of my problem!

  8. I have IBS, but the other kind where sometimes you just go, and go, and go. It took a long time, but I figured out what kinds of foods and eating habits trigger it, and can avoid flare ups for the most part.

I suggest yogurt at least once a day and coffee first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. πŸ™‚ My routine is that I get up, brush my teeth, drink my coffee and then wait before I eat anything. That coffee on an empty stomach sure gets my pipes a flowin! I also stay away from the processed foods during the day. They always make me bloat, etc.
