Ectopic update

This morning I had another follow up appointment with my RE. I had another ultrasound and he said everything was looking good….no cysts and no fluid, both good signs. I also had more blood work done including a CBC (complete blood count), another HCG beta draw, a comprehensive metabolic panel, and AST (SGOT)….not sure what that one is for. After the ultrasound & blood work I went into my RE’s office and we chatted about what comes next.

readytomoveonSo far my HCG levels have been dropping since my methotrexate shot on September 15th, but not at the rate that they generally like to see. For now, since I’m having no pain my RE doesn’t think it’s necessary to administer another shot of methotrexate, but if for some reason my levels start to level off and stop dropping we will have to do another at that point. He said he would call me this afternoon with today’s results and tell me when he needed me to come back in for another blood draw. I’m just so ready for this to be OVER so we can move on…..it’s such a long drawn out process….but I still probably have a few more weeks until my HCG returns to 0….on Monday it was at 1,290.

I asked about the timeline for when we could do another IUI and he said once my HCG returned to 0 that I would need to wait one full cycle, then we could start again….so probably by late November/early December we’ll be able to get started again. We discussed what protocol to use for this IUI. I told him I was slightly uncomfortable with how many follicles we had last time, and he agreed….he said ideally he would like to see 5-6 good sized follicles, and since we have MFI we would still be at a low chance for anything higher than twins. So we decided that we would do 1.5 vials of hMG instead of 2 like last time……which would mean that we will actually be wasting medicine each time since I have the type that is in powder form that is mixed with saline solution. I will add the 1ml saline solution to each vial of hMG, mix them up, then when drawing up the first vial of medication I will dispose of 1/2 of it, then draw up the second vial of medication. He suggested I go ahead and order the medication so we’re all set once we’re ready for our next IUI, so that’s what I plan to do. He wants me to order 20 vials of hMG, but since I still have 4 left over from last time I’ll only be ordering 16 (around $600).

I would like to say a special thank you to everyone who has reached out to me in these last few weeks, on instagram, blog comments, emails, cards, gifts…..it has all meant so much to me, and I’m so thankful to have such a supportive network of friends, family, and infertility sisters. 🙂 ❤

  1. I thought it was strange that you had so many follicles last time and the doctor still went for it! My doctor is SUPER serious about not having more than 3-4 follicles, if there are more, she will cancel the cycle. Hope you can start trying again soon!! Thinking about you!

    • I think with our MFI he’s a little more at ease with having more….and it looks like only one worked anyway, even out of 12…but I think I would be more comfortable with a lower number too. Thank you, I really appreciate it!

  2. That sounds like a great plan for the next cycle! It’s so hard to feel like you’re “wasting” medicine, but if you’re throwing away $150 of $600 worth of meds, that’s still way cheaper than having triplets! I so hope that your betas drop quickly and you can move forward with this process sooner rather than later…

  3. Again, I’m sorry you are going through this, but I love hearing that you have a plan for whats to come. If it were me, I know having that plan would help me survive the wait for the numbers to drop.

  4. I hope your beta comes back nice and low! I know the feeling of wanting to just move on and gear up for the next round! It sounds like you guys have a great plan going forward! I am still, very sorry you have had to walk through the discomfort of an ectopic and I’m always thinking about you! I went stalking when I noticed you were quiet on insta.gram the other day!

    • Today’s beta was 981, so I’ve still got a ways to go….but at least it’s moving in the right direction. LOL about stalking me on instagram….I really just haven’t had anything to update.

  5. so excited for your plan. I think it’s great that you at least know that IUI works for you. I know it has come with a huge price, but know that your family will expand and you will have an amazing and healthy pregnancy. looking forward to an exciting 2015 for you!! xo

    • Yes, it is a positive thing that we finally found a protocol that works for us…..even though it has meant two losses in the past 4 months. I hope and pray that with the few changes I’m making that we’re all set for IUI #6 and that it leads to a very exciting 2015 just like you said!! Thank you.

  6. I hope your latest blood test shows that your hcg has dropped quite a bit and that this whole nightmare is over soon. I’m so glad your doctor is watching you closely and that you have a plan moving forward. Thinking about you…

  7. I am sorry this seems to be the never ending ectopic. I get it. Your RE is only making you wait one cycle after a methotrexate shot? Methotrexate can affect your folic acid and ability to absorb it, most docs do a 3 cycle minimum after to give your body to recover. Maybe ask him about that? I am not trying to freak you out, just want you to be informed and advocate for yourself. Lots of *hugs* hun. You are in my thoughts.

    • Thanks! From what I’ve read most doctors do a 3 month minimum….which is what we’re doing. I had the shot in the middle of September…..and it’ll likely be beginning of December that we’re able to try again (because I’ll still have a few more weeks until my HCG returns to zero, then at least a 30 day cycle….but I’ve read your first could be much longer).

  8. Good news in turbulent waters! I’m glad that everything is returning to “normal”. I completely understand the the feeling of lets just move on!
Good luck in the upcoming weeks.
